Many of you are aware of the controversy surrounding the film version of Phillip Pullman’s The Golden Compass.

Included in this post are links to a number of articles, reviews and commentaries to help you make responsible decisions regarding your children’s access to the film. You will find a CNN news story, a comment by Albert Mohler, and reviews and comments from Christianity Today, Focus on the Family, and The Presbyterian Outlook.

I have tried to include a variety of viewpoints from within the Christian family and would encourage you to read them all.

Finally, it is your responsibility and right as a parent to determine what your child sees and reads.  But it is also the right and responsibility of the church to help you make that determination.

I have not read any of Pullman’s books, nor have I seen the movie.  From what I read of Pullman’s works and this film, however, I would urge extreme caution.

  • If you feel that your children should see the movie, be aware of material that makes it inappropriate for pre and young teens.  If your kids see it, then so should you in order to be able to discuss it.
  •  If your older teens see the movie, be prepared to discuss it with them.  It could provide an opportunity for critical thinking and a way to engage their faith in a new way, but please know that Pullman is not neutral; he hates God and the church.  He mocks the work of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.  Pullman’s bias should be known and exposed.

May God guide you as you seek to be the parents he is calling you to be.
