See Into a Favela

12.30.05

Here’s a site with some interesting video that will take those of you who have already been to Brazil right back into the Favela and will give those of you who have not been a sense of what you will find there. The organization that sponsors the project is called the Two Brothers Foundation, named after Dos Irmãos, the mountain of the Rocinha favela in Rio Janeiro. The Two Brothers Foundation is secular and based on college campuses in the U.S. They work especially at bringing educational opportunities to favela kids.

The link: Click Here. Once you get to the home page, click on “photos & videos” on the left side navigation panel. Then find the Two Brothers Foundation 2002 video. Great scenes — especially the moto ride up the hill! The second video is Diego Deane’s “Rocinha: A Look from Within.” This is probably the better done of the two, though half the film is taken up with Orlando’s birthday party preparations (but, yes, alcohol is also a major part of life in Favela da Ventosa).

The sights and sounds of both videos are reminiscent of Favela da Ventosa and they may help you understand just a bit better the needs and the joys of life in Jardim América and Favela da Ventosa where the Belo-Beaver Partnership does so much of its work.
