As we approach Thanksgiving week, we should be reminded that the biblical model of giving thanks is not just for – our laundry list of good things and happy circumstances. Christians always give thanks to God, the author of all good gifts. And, remarkably, Christians give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). As you gather with family and friends this week, please take some time around the table or in front of the fire to share the for, to and in of this year’s thanksgiving.
The Deacons are giving thanks to God for your generosity in this busy season. Through your giving – more generous than ever – we will be able to provide Thanksgiving food for around 150 people in 30 different families in our Beaver County community. Those of you who are planning to deliver baskets will be reminded of your pick-up and delivery instructions on Sunday. If you have a cell phone you may want to bring it just in case you get lost along the way…
Finally, you can give thanks by giving to others. The Saturday AFTER Thanksgiving will be our First Food and Friends day for November. Why not invest some time giving to others! See John Carr for details.
This week’s Extra! Extra! Read All About It! will feature the story of Japan’s Princess Sayako’s decision to marry a commoner and forego all her royal prerequisites. Here’s your link: to the story. And what does this have to do with forging a biblical view of the news? Come and find out!
We’ve had a great time with our Extra! Extra! Class, and this week’s will be the last installment for this round — maybe we’ll bring it back another time. On November 27, the first Sunday of Advent, we will begin an Advent class entitled Always Winter But Never Christmas, a series of soundings from C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. You may know that this first in the Chronicles of Narnia will open in movie form on December 9 as the most anticipated film of the season. The class will be a good time for parents, grandparents and lovers of good stories to be prepared to use this classic tale to enrich their Advent observances.
The SOUP DU JOUR for Sopa Domingo will be wedding soup. Those who placed an order can pick up their jars in the Memorial Room following worship and the Congregational Meeting, and I am told there will be some extra for those who want more.
Sunday is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in the church year and a glorious Sunday or praise and festive celebration at Park Presbyterian Church. And please remember our congregational meeting for the election of officers. We have a great slate!
See you Sunday!
